The Elements of a Dystopia

A dystopia is the "polar opposite" of a utopia. Although they may be very different, these two genres along with the other two genres defined earlier have similarities as well. These four genres are all based on fiction and our imagination for the future. All of these illustrate characters that are living in a society in an altered environment. Dystopias and utopias are extremes of each other as people in utopias live very comfortably and worry-free, while people in dystopias are fearful and struggling to live. Unlike utopias, post-apocalyptic societies are more similar to dystopias in their settings. Post-Apocalyptic societies may appear to be more extreme in how negative their situations are, but both show the struggle of surviving in a world that is not easy for them to achieve. Science fiction can be found in all of these genres as it easier to include advancements in science and technology in societies of imagination.

"Avengers: Infinity War" is one of the most popular dystopian movies ever created. The heroic Avengers battle against the mighty Thanos to prevent him from creating his "utopia" by decimating one half of the universe off of the planet. Thanos's lack of care and judgment for those being decimated are the reason why this movie is actually considered a dystopia. Thanos's actions were dehumanizing and selfish. His chaotic ability to use the infinity stones to destroy people's lives injected fear into all of the Avengers' hearts. They battled and sacrificed themselves to prevent this from happening, but fell short at the end, leading to Thanos succeeding in creating his dystopia... until the next movie.
